DISPUTE OVER RENT
LANDLORD WHO TOOK LAW INTO OWN HANDS COURT MARKS DISAPPROVAL Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. Judgment was given yesterday in the case in which Edward Roy O’Connor and his wife, trading as the Alaska Fur Company, proceeded against Mrs. L. E. Wilson, their landlord, for damages for the wrongful entry of their factory, rented from her, for the removal of skins and furs and for an assault which was alleged to have been made against the wife in plaintiff’s shop. Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., said the presumption being against the wrongdoer, he had to give judgment for £4O in respect to the skins said to be missing. People had no right to take the law into their own hands and to mark the Court’s disapproval he allowed £5 damages for wrongful entry. For wrongful detention of a coat and fur from the shop he allowed £l4 ss, and for the assault on Mrs. O'Connor £3, a total of £63 ss, with an order for the return of the coat and fur. On a counter claim for rent and damages in regard to the state in which O’Connor had left the premises, Mrs. Wilson was awarded £49 15s.
