HAD BEEN SMOKING IN ROOM MAN’S DEATH IN HOTEL Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. At the inquest concerning the dea*h of Nicol Ferguson Cameron, found dead in the corridor of the Gresham Hotel following a fire on August 16, the coroner. Mr. T. B. McNeil, returned a verdict that Cameron died from asphyxiation by smoke. The coroner remarked that it was not apparent why deceased should not have been able to make a safe escape, * as the evidence showed that there was no obstruction in the passages and that the fire escapes were in perfect condition. He also said that the evidence showed that Cameron was a heavy smoker and there seemed to be no doubt that he was smoking in his room and by some means the bedclothes caught alight. On account of two brandies he had had he might not have been normal at the lime the alarm was given.
