BILLIARDS TOURNEY
SECOND ROUND BEGINS AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS M.D. White met and easily defeated A. .Squire in the first match of the second round of the Auckland Amateur Billiards Championship tourney Played at Messrs. Billiards. Limited’s’ showrooms, last evening. The trophy for the tourney is the Billiards, Limited Shield. White commenced to play up to his best form and at his fourth visit to the table compiled a splendidly-played break of 77, the highest of the tournament to date. Squire had had few opportunities to get going and had scored only 20 odd when his opponent reached the century mark. White, who was playing the half-ball hazard well, varied his play in a nicely - compiled break of 53. Squire was playing much below the form be displayed against Roberts. He .recovered, however, by making a top-of-the-table break of 26, being unfortunate in losing position when going well. White replied, forcing the game, and a break of 43 was his next effort of note. The scores at this stkge were 269 to 108 in White’s favWhite continued to play brilliantly and again exceeded the 70 mark by registering a 72 break. Squire, who had been unable to cope with his opponent’s?' consistent scoring, rallied and added breaks of 21 and 29, being unfortunate in miscuing when making a losing hazard break. White soon afterwards added a 25 break and placed the issue beyond doubt by running to points with a 24 break. The final scores were:—M. D. White. 500, breaks of 77. 53, 43, 72, 39, 25 and 24. Average, 11. N. Squire, 225, breaks of 26, 21 and 29. IT. Randrup will play T. Tierney this evening.
