POMP AT PEKING
NEW ADMINISTRATION SWORN IN YEN HSI-SHAN LEADER Reed. 9.5 a.m. SHANGHAI, Tues. ' The newly-created Independent Peking Government has been formally inaugurated under the leadership of General Yen Hsi-Shan, the central figure of the anti-Nanking rebellion. Pomp and grandeur marked the ceremonies, which were attended by hundreds of Peking residents and prominent Chinese and foreigners. Marshal Chang Hsueh Liang, Manchurian dictator, reported that he declined a post in the Government, although maintaining his neutrality. A public holiday was proclaimed in the territory controlled by the Northern Coalition. Nanking’s military efforts to regain control of North China have been utterly unsuccessful, and the positions of both armies are practically unchanged.
