VIOLIN

J. P. HULME AND PUPILS ENJOYABLE ENTERTAINMENT An enjoyable entertainment was provided by Mr. John P. Hulme and his pupils at a violin recital given last evening at the Lewis Eady Hall. The work of the students was of a high standard and many interesting performances were heard. Mr. Hulme played Bruch’s “Concerto ip G Minor.” The three movements in this composition were well defined. The allegro moderato, with its heavy demand on technical ability, was given a capable performance. The adagio movement, with its pleasing melody, was also very enjoyable, while the spectacular third movement, allegro energico, mad© a brilliant finish for the piece. Miss Theo Halpin, who was the accompanist for the evening, provided an artistic background for Mr. Hulme in this work. Two enjoyable numbers were selected by Miss Nancye Handing, who played “Legende” (Wieniawski) with nice expression, and was also very pleasing in her interpretation of Kreisler’* dainty “Liebeslied.” Mr. J. L. Chapman gave a pleasing interpretation of the usually commonplace “Caprice Viennois.” by the same composer. He also played Schubert’s “Ave Maria” as an effective conclusion to the programme. Miss Dorothy Veall gave a pleasing performance of “Le Cygne” (SaintSaens), and also played Kreisler’s arrangement of “The Rosary.” Mr. Fred Coleman played “Ziegeuner Weisen” (Sarasate), showing good knowledge of his instrument in the sparkling climax. Two bright numbers were given by Mr. James McKnight, “Bolero” (Hubay), and “Schon Rosmarin” (Kreisler). Both were played with fine verve, and his handling of the tricky Kreisler piece was commendable. Others to contribute enjoyable items were: Mr. James Paterson, who played “Allegro Brillant” (Ten Have) and “Hungarian Dance” (Drdla); Miss Frances E. Lee, “Air for G String” (Bach) and “Liebesfreud” (Kreiserj; Mr. Frank Cassidy, “Meditation” (Bach, arr. Gounod); Master James Molloy, “Intermezzo” from “Cavalleria Rusticana” (Mascagni), and “Shepherd’s Dance” (German); Master W. Johnm G" (Beethoven) and Mr. James Gallaher, “Melody” (Dawes'* and "Melodic” (Gluck-Kreisler).
