CAMBRIDGE HORSE FAIR

Prom Our Own Correspondent CAMBRIDGE, Tuesday. Organised by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company, the annual spring horse fair opened at the local saleyards this morning and will be continued until Friday. During the course of the sain well over 800 horses, mostly draughts, will be offered. This year tho entry of draughts is particularly good, and the satisfactory measure of interest displayed in the fair rather offsets the contention that the day of the horse is nearly over. Three days have been set apart for the disposal of the 611 unbroken and working draught horses, light and harness horses being offered on the concluding day. attendanec this morning was very representative, there being buyers from all parts of the province, and much farther afield. Entries, as usual, have been brought from a very wide area, including a big contingent from Mr. \V. Wilson, of Gisborjfe. The sale commenced this morning with the big offering of unbroken draughts and the bidding was surprisingly good for the opening period. As the day’s offering progressed interest became keener, and quality horses were in demand. The highest sale of the day was £33 for a four-year bay mare sold to R. Troughton. Several other quality horses sold as follow: —Four-year bay mare, £3O 10s, X.Z. Perpetual Forests, Ltd.: 4-year bay gelding, £26, ditto: 4-year chestnut gelding, £29, ditto: [ three 4-year bay geldings were also sold to the same buyer for £25 each. ! Good quality horses averaged around ! £lB to £2O, with quite a good percent- ! age making up to £25: less likely sorts, about £l2 to £ls; inferior, £7 to £lO. The great bulk of the borses offered | this morning and early this afternoon were from the East Coast. Practically everything offered sold under the hammer.' and if the demand keeps the sale should be a considerable improvement on last year. There is plenty of indication that with the increasing price of benzine greater use is going to be made of th# useful working draught sort, both on the farm and off it.
