MUNICIPAL BAND
GOOD CONCERT EVENING An excellent concert was given by the Auckland Municipal Band in the Town Hall on Saturday evening, Mr. H. C. McLennan, acting-conductor, being in control. The ever-popular overture of von Suppe, “Morning, Noon and Night," introduced the entertainment in pleasing fashion. German’s “Merrie England” was played with the peaceful atmosphere that suggested a quiet morning in the English countryside. “A Musical Switch” showed the connection between modern popular music and the classics. Two other band numbers were “The First Division” and the waltz “Casino Tanze,” both played well up to the standard that the band has set. Instrumental solos were given by Mr. J. Davies, who played “On Wings Of Song” on the cornet, Mr. McLennan, who played “Lucia Fantasie,” and Mr. R. Jackson, whose xylophone solo, “Bagatelle/’ was popular wl% the audience. Several creditable »cal numbers were offered. Madam Cora Melvin and Mr. Norman Day were appreciated in their singing of the duets “Calm, Silent Night” (Goetz) and •'April Morn" (Batten). Madam Melvin also sang “Solveig's Song,” and Mr. Day “King Charles." as solos.
