COMMISSIONER'S ADVICE
“TEMPER JUSTICE WITH MERCY” AUCKLAND’S FAREWELL Advice that they temper justice with mercy was given to a representative meeting of the police force in Auckland on Saturday evening by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. W. G. Wohlmann. Advantage was taken of the Commissioner's visit to the City to hid him farewell as superintendent of the Auckland head district. An assurance of support from all officers and men in Auckland was given the commissioner by Inspector J. Hollis, who made the presentation of a grandfather clock on behalf of the force in Auckland. Mr. Hollis said Mr. Wohlmann had won the respect of all during his four years as superintendent. His departure was a great los3 to the Auckland district, but the greater possibilities of his new position were fully recognised. Valedictory speeches were also made by Sub-Inspectors Gibson and Shanahan, Chief-Detective Hammond. Senior-Sergeants Powell and Flannlgan, and non-commissioned members of the police and detective branches of tha force.
Mr. Wohlmann fully approved the Ideal of service referred to by some of the speakers. “The force is responsible to the public, and, to obtain the best return, it is necessary that all members co-operate willingly and glvo full Service,” he said. Officers dealing with offenders should remember they were mentally “sick,” the Commissioner added. They should carry out their duties while tempering justice with mercy a 3 far as was possible. The public should appreciate to the full the value of the Dominion’s fine police force and, in order that this should be done, a wise discretion should be shown at all limes.
