WATER IN MILK

STORY OF LEAKY COOLER WHANGAREI MAN FINED From Our Own Correspondent WHANGAREI, Today. Charged with selling milk that failed to comply with the Food and Drugs Act, J. M. Stedman appeared in the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr. G. N. Morris. S.M.. on two counts. The health inspector said he had taken samples of milk on two occasions. The first contained 14 per cent, water, and the second 10 per cent. Defendant said that on the first occasion he thought the water got into the milk accidentally, but on the second he made investigations, and found the cooler leaking, and water going with the milk into the cans. The inspector said he thought defendant should have found the leak in the cooler, as it must have been a large one to admit 14 per cent. of water. On the first charge defendant was fined £5, and costs 10s, and on the second he was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 10s.

FINED AT OTAHUHU

“MUST HAVE BEEN ACCIDENT” OTAHUHU. Today. For selling milk with 14 per cent, of added water. Walter John Drabble of Will, was fined £7 10s and ordered to pay costs 13s by Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Otahuhu Magistrate's Court this morning. For selling milk which did not comply with the standard prescribed, he was convicted and ordered to pay costs 3 os.

Inspector Furness said the Health Department obtained samples of milk In a City dairy. When analysed it did not come up to standard. He made inquiries as to where the milk was bought and a test was made of four 10gallon cans belonging to defendant. It was found that each can contained one and a-half gallons of added water. The retailer risked prosecution if the supplier could not be traced, but luckilv for the department the defendant continued the practice and was traced. Drabble said he had been off work seven weeks on account of a broken turn. He was employed on wages, and it was no benefit to him to add water There must have been an accident somewhere.
