Pope’s Commentaries Owned by a King
Another MS. book that has a history, is the Commentaries of Gregory the Great, on the Book of Job, which contains many excellent moral maxims. The commentaries were issued in 37 books, of which 27 are in this volume. This book of Pope Gregory was transcribed before 1422 in a beautiful Gothic letter with Celtic and English initials on finest vellum. It was bound for Henry V. of England and the covers are stamped with the Royal devices including the Lancastrian Rose. Experts have classed it as the oldest specimen of English Royal binding known to exist, and an expert who recently visited Auckland confirmed this opinion. The book is therefore exceedingly' valuable.
