Rare English Books
Other rare and valuable early English books now in Auckland came from the presses of Richard Pynson, 1497; Robert Toy, 1501, Wynkyn de Worde 1527 all pioneer printers. Famous among these books is the Breeches Bible, printed in 1553 by the royal printer, Christopher Barker, “Translated according to the Ebrew and Greeke.” The title is in a splendid woodcut border. Then there is Spenser’s "Faerie Queene,” printed in 1590, a perfect copy of the first, edition. It was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth. Sir George Grey's autograph appears on a copy of Shakespeare's “Pericles.” printed 1619, but a sentence scrawled in an old style of writing, on the back of the title, rouses more curiosity. It reads: “Death found Surly Ben exceeding poor.” Poor old Ben ! He came to an end under conditions like to many others, but at least he passed into history.
