PHAR LAP

NOW KNOWN AS “THE RED SHADOW” OTHER OWNERS CONCERNED Eurythmic in his heyday was known as “The Red Champion” because of his glistening chestnut coat, and also because his owner’s colours were all red. In the stable Eurythmic was known as “Red.” After Eurythmic won six or seven weight-for-ago races in succession an enterprising newspaper man christened him “The Red Flash.” It therefore seems appropriate to call Phar Lap “The Red Shadow,” as this mighty galloper is casting a shadow over the weight-for-age races. But He Won't Be With Phar Lap out of the way, the weight-for-age races at the A.J.C. Spring meeting and all those races run under the scale before the Randwick meeting opens would be extremely interesting with Amounis, Nightmarch, and Limerick in opposition, to say nothing of others. But Phar Lap’s shadow is causing concern. If he continues to go on well there does not seem to bo much hope of his being beaten. Probably Nightmarch is better this spring than he was in the autumn; in fact he might be better than ever before, but in view of the awful drubbings that he received when last he met Phar Lap, he would need to make extraordmarv improvement, and Phar Lap would have to slip down the ladder to allow the gulf between them to be bridged.
