VERANDAH SIGNS
COUNCIL AMENDS BY-LAW BELIEVED HARSH SOMETHING ABOUT POLONIES Chiefly through the opposition of Cr. G. W. Hutchison and Cr. W. H. Murray, who pointed out Aveaknesses in a portion of a draft by-laAv submitted to the City Council restricting advertising signs on shop verandahs, the council modified the clause at a special meeting on Thursday afternoon. The draft regulation, which dealt with the use of trade names and the names of occupiers’ agencies, was in these terms as first submitted: “A sign affixed to a verandah shall contain only the name and business designation of the occupier of the premises immediately abutting on to such verandah on the same floor.”
‘‘This seems to me the most drastic thing in the whole by-laAv,” said Cr. Hutchison. “It means that you can put up the word ‘Butcher,’ but you cannot pux up the word ‘Polony/ yet it might L>e more necessary, especially if the tradesman is not wellknown. to advertise his goods than his name. 1 think wo are going too far in restricting business.” “WOULD BE HARDSHIP” Cr. Murray held that it would be a hardship to restrict a business man to the use of his own name and designation alone in a verandah advertisement. It was often of great value to him to advertise that he held certain agencies. It meant more to a tradesman to put up a sign reading "Tom Jones, agent for So and So,” than a sign reading, say. “Toni Jones, electric fittings.” Cr. Hutchison moved the amendment that the trade name, business or agency of the occupier be permitted provided the space taken up on the sign with those designations was no larger than the space taken up by the name of the occupier. Cr. F. X. Bar tram: If the object of this clause is to prevent a man advertising too much. I am against it. T cannot agree with the view that because a man has a lot of lines to sell It© should be pre\*ented from advertising tho lot. Cr. J. Dempsey, chairman of the Works Committee, asked whether the council Avanted a chemist to plaster his verandah with the names of all the pills he sold. The amendment AA-as agreed to.
