AMATEUR BILLIARDS
PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP YOUNG PLAYER SUCCESSFUL M. Herewini and T. Tierney, two new contenders for championship honours, met last evening for the Billiards. Limited, Shield and the Auckland Provincial amateur championship, held in the showrooms of Messrs. Billiards, Limited. Tierney i'fe probably the youngest player in New Zealand who has ever played in these games. He is only 15 years of age. The play was even in the early stages, both players finding the match conditions a little difficult. Tierney reached*the hundred mark first, aided by a break of 21, and had slightly the better of the game up to the 200 mark. Herewini took the lead soon after by making breaks of 20 and 41. Herewini then made a break of 36 to one of 24 by his youthful opponent. Tierney made the scores 31S all by making a nice all-round break of 36. Tierney led past the 400 mark, but Herewini, in securing a 32 break, made the scores again even at 411. The game contested to the end. Tierney eventualy winning by 38 points. The final scores were:—T. Tierney, 500; breaks of 21, 24. 26, 20. M. Herewini, 462; breaks of 20. 41, 36. 32. M. I). White will play J. Secer this evening.
