A VETERAN WRITER In the last Birthday Honours Miss Annie S. Swan (Mrs. Burnett Smith) received the C.8.E., and this year she celebrates her jubilee as a novelist Her first novel, “Aldersyde,” was praised by Gladstone, and she attributes her success to specialising in the love story and writing about, the social class with which she is intimately acquainted. CANINE PORTRAITURE An exhibition or dog portraits, the work of the English artist. Miss Dorothy S. Hallett, was held recently in London, when pictures of dogs of all types and in all moods were on view. So much in sympathy is she with the canine'world that she has chosen dog portraiture as a vocation. Perhaps her most distinguished subject was the Prince of Wales’s Alsatian, Claude of Seale. On its completion the Prince bought the picture. A WOMAN EDITOR The editbrial chair of tlie “Northern Territory Times,” Darwin, is now occupied by a woman, Mrs. J. S. Litchfield, who, under a pen-name, has been a valued contributor, to Australian journals. The paper was founded in 1573, and though it has passed through several periods of adversity its new editor is very hopeful about its future.

via, who claims descent from the Spanish conqueror, Pizarro. She is 15 years old, and the photograph was taken when she was on a recent visit to New York.
THE WORK-A-DAY WORLD One of the latest apprentices in the world of business is Miss Lilian Chaytor, the eldest daughter of Sir Edmund and Lady Chaytor. Deciding on a career in life, she has joined the ranks of students at one of the large London stores, and she works with a will from 9 a.m. until 6.30 p.m. Recently she returned to England from a finishing school in Switzerland.
A SONG WRITER Miss May Eardley-WilnnC, daughteiof the late Rear-Admiral Sir S. Eurd-ley-Wilmot, is well known as a writer of lyrics, among her most popular songs being “Rose of My Heart,” “Coming Home” and “My Little Grey Home in the West.” She also gives lectures* and conducts community singing, but confesses that her favourit o occupations are reading and travelling. Her homo is at Marlow, Eng land, but she is now visiting Australia.
