WENT JOY-RIDING
TRIED TO PASS “DUD” CHEQUE PROBATION AND PROHIBITION Henry Neil Whisker appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court today, pleading guilty to intent to defraud. He was placed on probation for 12 months and prohibited. Whisker, a married man with a family of four, pleaded guilty to attempting to defraud by the issue of a valueless cheque for £ls on August 16. Mr. K. C. Aekins defended him. “He got drunk and, together with another man, hired a taxi to drive to Otahuhu and round the City. He tried to pay his fare with this valueless cheque,” said Chief-Detective Hammond. “He seems a fairly decent chap and didn’t succeed in passing the cheque.” Mr. Aekins said that accused thought he had got the cheque form from another man. He was drunk at the time. His family was receiving charitable aid. “Well, he certainly shouldn’t go flying around in taxis,” said the magistrate. On the recommendation of Mr. Campbell, probation officer, Mr. Hunt placed accused on probation for 12 months and prohibited him.
