Spring Racing

MARTON’S BIG PROGRAMME

Plenty of Runners Tomorrow

By

“Early Bird.”

THE Marton Jockey Club tomorrow will hold its spring meeting', an excellent programme of eight events being scheduled. Fields are very big in the majority of events, and backers are set some difficult propositions. A review of the fields appears below.

The course at Marton is certain to be heavy, for although it is an excellently laid-out track the ground holds the water. There are fine fields engaged in all eight events tomorrow, and there should be some most interesting racing.

All training centres in the North Island will be represented, from Ellerslie in the North, Trentham and Waterlea (Blenheim) in the south, Greenmeadows in the cast, and New Plymouth in the west. Therefore the racing at the Marton Junction will be of considerable intei'est

as a guide to future events of even more importance than the contests to be staged tomorrow. The first race on the card is the Trial Plate Quito a number of smart performers 11 re engaged here, despite the fact that it is a race for non-winners. But in this respect the Marton Trial is really a sort of classic, in which light the Trentham Trial is unofficially regarded. The best form of all is that possessed by Imamint, who finished second in the Avondale Stakes, and Te Rapa advices indicate that she is ready for backing. In her few races to date this 111 ly has not begun very brilliantly and in a big field this will be an undoubted handicap. However she has a. first class horseman aboard Wild Country is another Aucklander that has pace, and her trial the other morn--1 n /7, v 'f as impressive. In addition she will have 11. Gray’s services. Pat’s Boy. Seneschal. Auckland Gas, Pandia Appledore, Paratoo. Tar Baby, NiglU-

mare all have credentials. it is not an easy race to pick, but in their selections the public may go for IMAMINT WILD COUNTRY Rata Hack Hurdles This has attracted a field of quite reasonable dimensions, compared with somo of the other events. Disrank showed great form at Awapuni, and if quite recovered from his slight mishap will be in keen demand. Make Up has not raced since two most promising Trentham appearances; on the last day there, Make Up was a certainty beaten, conceding the field nearly half a furlong start and then getting beaten very narrowly. Royal Damon showed promise when tried over the sticks some time back, and Nippy is reported to have been schooling excellently. Shining Armour was a good one on the fiat, and Calithe has shown form among the hunters’ class. Masher is an improver, and so too is Ruby Dawn, whose party is said to be fairly confident. Redation was second to Jiu Jazz at and the latter again comes in on the minimum, which should make him dangerous. Likely to be in demand are

MAKE UP ROYAL DAMON Spring Hack Cup Never before in the history of racing at Marton has this event drawn such a big field, no less than 26 having been paid up for. Perhaps scratchings will reduce the number to about a score, and even this will be too big for this barrier, situated on the turn. The possibles are many and practically every horse weighted above the minimum must be given a chance. To fine them down to a. few known for certain to be lorward enough to be in the running are Brilliant Light, Portray, Unoco, Goldlike, Pakitere. Huntingdon, Little Wonder, and Desert Lad, and of those backers may decide in favour of BRILLIANT LIGHT UNOCO. Marton Handicap This field is much superior to the lot that paraded for this race twelve months ago, for the quartet at the head of affairs represent pretty good form. It would seem that the issue

could safely be narrowed down to this four—Paddon, Marjoram, and the Courageous-Hynanna bracket. A,s this race has already been reviewed more fully, it may suffice to indicate that the best supported may be

PADDON HYN ANN A-COURAGEOUS bracket. Hunt Cup Steeplechase This is one of the last of the Hunt Cup contests to be staged, and the form of the acceptors has been pretty well disclosed. Postman rather stands out, with his four wins on end. Risk lias won twice of late, and he is

bracketed with Trouble, who won this race three years back. Mandate is regarded as a doubtful starter. Huirangi Girl was second in the Taranaki Hunt Cup last week, and Copey was third on the same day in a minor cross-country event. Day Lass and Nimblefoot may be the pick pf the others. Those in demand will be POSTMAN RISK-TROUBLE bracket. Tutaenui Handicap There does not appear to be anything standing out in this field, and horses that have had the winter racing to fit them for the journey of nearly nine furlongs will have a lot in their favour. Coming within this category are Mt. Shannon. Imateagirl. Shortly, Sky rider, Archeria. Grand Jury, Calithe, Winacre and Warzone. It is an open race, with perhaps a preference being shown for the chances of SHORTLY WINACRE. Railway Handicap Like the principal handicap, this i sprint has been already covered in detail, and one has no reason to change from the preference expressed for the promoted hack, Coon Song. Others that will have to be considered are Limited, Broad Acre, Maui. Tenterden, Blimp, Limosin and Acora, the chances of Historic, Merry Damon and Otairi being preferred over a longer journey. Favourites will probably be COON SONG LIMOSIN Electric Handicap There :s no dearth of public form to go upon in the final flutter, the five furlongs Electric Handicap, which has drawn a field of 27—much too large even with a lot of scratchings. Winners over the last couple of months are Taranto. Royal Finance, Huntingdon, Sporting Chance, Little Wonder, and Derry Belle, with the majority of these at home over the distance. Outside this lot there are Autopay. Zarene. Royal Routine, Abbey Queen. Some Acre, Baskier, and Wild

Country. If Autopay was ready he would be recommended without hesitation, for he was one of our speediest youngsters last season; however he has not raced for a little time. In what is a most difficult race those that may be in keenest demand are ZARENE ROYAL FINANCE. Scratchings reported yesterday for the Marton Jockey Club spring meeting are:—Tc Atiawa, Monaloff, Orapai, Tegan.
