GAY BUTTONHOLES
AUCKLAND RESPONDS TO STREET COLLECTION TWO LEAGUES COMBINE Auckland took on a more sprightly air this morning, when business men arrived at their offices wearing spring flowers in their buttonholes. It was Daffodil Day, the annual street collection of the Victoria League and the Navv League. Those artistic city rulers who dictate the design and lay-out of the people’s parks and the size and colour of hoardings, must have breathed a sigh of relief when it was announced that buttonholes would be available to donors if preferred to the usual printed ribbon tag, given at such collections. Tt was certainly a wellconceived idea, and one which appealed to the majority. Forty stalls, with hundreds of workers were busy throughout the City and suburbs. Half of these were under the control of Boy Scouts, the remainder being divided up between workers from the two Leagues concerned and other organisations which aim at promoting goodwill and distributing cheer. The Women’s Institute held a sale of provisions at the Victoria League rooms in Shortland Street.
The funds of both societies should benefit considerably through this effort, since there were few passers in City streets this morning who could resist the inviting jingle of the outstretched collection boxes. Figures will be available early tomorrow'.
