INCREASED BUS FARES
PROPOSAL RATIFIED BY COUNCIL ONE TREE HILL POSITION An increase in the present rating of fares was sought by Suburban Buses, Ltd., when a deputation waited on the One Tree Hill Borough Council at its meeting last evening. It was stated that owing to the increase in the petrol tariff it was now impossible to conduct the service under the existing rates. The company’s representative said that the service operated between T# Papa pa and the City. The present single fare was 8d and the return la 2d. It was proposed to alter the I single to 9d and the return to Is. 4d. ! The workers’ weekly ticket would cost 5s 3d. compared with the present ss. ■ and the 12-trip concession card 7s |instead of 6s 6d. It was pointed out that the increase in the petrol-tax had affected the company, and the only alternative it could adopt, to avert running at a loss, was to raise the fares. The proposed, increase would enable the company to reap a slight profit, whereas before it was practically running at a loss. FAVOURED INCREASE ! The Mayor. Mr. .T. S. Hardwick, said that, personally, he was in favour of the increase. The representative said that tn» company’s application for the increase was now before the Transport Board and would probably be considered on September 16. _ It was decided to inform the board that tlie council was agreeable to the increase. It was decided to support the proposed amendment to the Rating Act | made by the Auckland Local Bodies i Association, in connection with refund I on -empty dwellings in the case where : local bodies rated on the unimproved I value. . The building inspector s report I showed that five building permits had I been issued during the fortnight ending August 28. Since the beginning 1 of the year 137 permits bad been issued to the total value of £ 27.063.
