STRANGLED BY SCARF
SHOCKING ACCIDENT TO WORKMAN VERDICT BY CORONER A verdict of accidental death by strangulation was returned by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner, yesterday afternoon, at an inquest concerning the death of Mr. James Breen, aged 37, who was killed while working at the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company’s store on King’s Wharf on August 14. According to evidence given by J. w. Wheatley, an engineer of the company, Breen, who was a greaser and odd-job man, was engaged in whitewashing the walls of the pump-house. Shortly after 12.30 p.m. he was found lying over the rails of a narrow platform with the scarf he was wearing wrapped twice around his neck and the other end twisted round the rotating shaft of a machine. Breen must have been standing on a machine platform which had been moved from its normal position for the purpose of the whitewashing work. It was most unwise of him to wear a scarf and Breen had been warned to keep away from running machinery while it was work ing. J. G. Reekie, inspector of machinery, said he did not consider the platform would be dangerous for a greaser
