STOCK PRICES FIRM

N.Z. MARKET REVIEWED WSTFIELD OFFERINGS By E.IV.C. Very firm prices ruled at the principal stock-selling centres of the Dominion yesterday. Entries, for the most part, were on the short side, and advances on late rates were recorded in several sections. At Westfield yesterday another short yarding of fat cattle, comprising little more than 400 head in all, came forward to see well-finished sorts meet with a very keen demand and, although last week’s quotations were not changed in the auctioneer’ reports, they were exceeded in several instances when special lots were put up. Prime young beef, generally, made the equivalent of up to 42s a hundred; best young cow and heifer beef made up to 40s a hundred. Near Auckland, graziers and fatteners were the principal contributors to the beef offering, but the choicest quality lines came from further afield. One of the heaviest prime lines of bullocks seen in the yards this season, came forward on account of Jas. Taylor, of the Cambridge district, to average £l9 3s and make up to £2O; thero were nine head in the line. A consignment of particularly choice prime heifers sent up by scow from Gisborne made a very fine showing and met with keen competition at up to £ls 12s fid, averaging £l3 14s fid. Extra heavy prime steers, generally made to £2O; heavy prime, £l4 5s to £IG 10s; medium, £l2 10s to £l4; light and small, from £0 ss; extra heavy prime cows and heifers made to £ls 12s fid; heavy. £lO to £l2 10s; medium, £S 5s to £9 10s; light and small, from £6; unfinished cannery from £4. A heavy yarding of calves met with a very firm market. Exporters for the bobby veal trade paid up to 13s; well-nourished fresh-dropped to 4-weeks-old calves made from 14s to 355; medium vealers made from 40s to 655; heavy vealers made to £5; extra choice runners made to £9 17s. Choice Quality Sheep Tho fat sheep section contained a big percentage of well fatted ewes and wethers. The market for good quality lines held very firm with a tendency at times to exceed late rates. Extra choice prime, but not exceptionally big-boned, wethers made up to 33 s 9d; heavy prime wethers made from 2Ss 9d to 325; medium, 2fis to 28s fid; extra choice prime ewes made to 28s fid: prime 22s to 255; medium, from J Bs. Extra choice prime hoggets made to 30s fid; prime, 25s to 28s; unlinished, from 10s. A few spring lambs made from 22s to 30s 3d. Another limited entry of fat pigs mot with a very firm market. Bacon - ers made around fid a lb; porkers made 1 rom 7jd to 8d a lb. Choppers sold from £2 10s to £4 17s fid; heavy and medium baconers. £3 6s to £3 15s; light baconers and heavy porkers, £2 lfis to £3 3s; medium porkers ’and light porkers, £2 8s to £2 14s; small and unfinished porkers, £ 2 to £2 6s. Values were firm at late quotations. Large stores, £2 to £2 3s; slips, £1 10s to £1 18s; vveaners, £1 to’ £1 Hawke’s Bay Market Improves At the Stortford Lodge (Hastings) stock sale today there was a large attendance of the public; there was a smaller yarding of cattle, but a large entry of fat and store sheep; beef met with a firmer sale, showing a rise of 30s a head; a very keen sale of fat and store sheep also resulted in an advance in prices. Ox beef made to a hundred; fat ewes made to 265; wether hoggets, to 20s; aged ewes and lambs, to 26s fid; weaner steers, to £ 4 lfis. Johnsonville Market At the Johnsonville (Wellington) stock sale yesterday there was an average yarding of all classes of stock. The bullocks comprised mostly prime heavy-weight cattle, which met with good competition on a par with last week’s rates. No female stock cr vealers came forward. Wethers comprised heavy-weight sheep, with a few pens of lighter sorts. Competition was good. Prices were, if anything, slightly easier for heavy-weight sheep, but firm for medium and lighter sorts. Ewes which were of good quality met with a fair demand. Hoggets and lambs were also sought after at late rates. Extra heavy bullocks made £lfi 2s fid to £l7; heavy bullocks, £ls 5s to £ls 15s; bullocks, £l3 15s to £l4; extra heavy wethers, 32s Id; heavy wethers, 28s lOd to 29s fid; medium wethers, 27s 9d to 28s; light wethers, 25s to 26s fid; heavy ewes, 22s to 23s Gd; ewes, 21s 3d; maiden ewes, 27s 9d to 30s; lambs, 21s 9d to 245. Firm Sale at Addington The weekly stock market at Addington today was the second in succession at which there have been short entries in each of the principal sections. It was also noteworthy for a further substantial rise in the value of beef for all classes, of which prices improved by fully £1 a head, and a further rise in mutton values. In the fat cattle section there was only onp line of North Island cattle forward, a total of 51 head from the Palmerston North district, but the yarding was also supplemented by lines from West Coast and Otago. The quality was outstanding. This and tho fact that the entry was scarcely sufficient to meet butchers’ requirements for a week made lor very keen competition. A yarding of 21 spring lambs sold around Is 3d a lb. An entry of 3,759 fat sheep came forward. Extra prime wethers made to 40s lOd a head; prime, 31s fid to 35s Gd; extra prime ewes, to 33s 7d; prime, 24s to 28s; extra prime hoggets, to 31s 4d; prime, 26s fid to 295.
