SAILOR BORROWED A TAXI-CAB MUST PAY DAMAGES Just “for a bit of fun,” Albie Edgren tried his hand at driving a taxi — without the taxi-driver’s consent. He found his fun expensive when he appeared at the Police Court today. Edgren, a Finnish seaman, aged 35, was charged with converging a car valued at £3OO, the property of Ralph Shewbridge, to his own use. Through Mr. K. C. Aekins he pleaded guilty. “This man, with three companions, left the Omana yesterday,” said Senior-Sergeant Powell. “They hired a taxi and drove around for a while. Then, while the driver was speaking on a telephone, accused, who was a hit under the influence of liquor, drove the car away and smashed into something, damaging the car to the extent. of about £10.” “They asked me to ring up about hoard for them,” said the taxi-driver. “While I was in the box they drove the car away. There is more damage than is shown in the charge-sheet. The battery is damaged.” Mr. PL K. Hunt, S.M., convicted accused, and ordered him to pay damages, £lO. and £2 compensation to the taxi-driver.
