NEW ROUTE PROPOSED
PAPATOETOE TO ONEHUNGA ROAD THROUGH MANGERE A scheme to construct a main arterial road from Papatoetoe, through the Mangere district to Onehunga, linking with Manukau Road, has been prepared by the Papatoetoe Welfare League. Efforts are now being made to obtain support in the Mangere and Onehunga districts and the proposal will later be brought before the authorities governing the regional planning scheme for Auckland. The proposed route will traverse the Mangere district on the western side of the peninsula. In this area at present, the roading system is purely rural and the roads run at right angles to the railway and Great South Road. It is considered the roading is not suitable for through traffic and for transport services. It is proposed that a main highway should be constructed between Papatoetoe 1 and the Mangere Bridge at Onehunga. To do
this it will be necessary to link several roads in the Mangere district and to straighten- and make first-class thoroughfares of the existing roads. From the Mangere Bridge, the present route would be suitable for a distance of about half a mile, to the point where Favona Road and Robeitson Road branch. From that point it is proposed that existing roads should be conne«ted until a main arterial route joins the Great South Road at Papatoetoe. It is pointed out in support of the proposal that the district to the west of Otahuliu is being subdivided rapidly and that many portions are quickly becoming industrial. Thus a main road through the area is becoming increasingly necessary. Such a road, it is stated, will also add greatly to the facilities of the residents in the district, as the present bus service traverses winding routes. Although the distance between Papatoetoe and the City will not be shortened by the proposed road, it will bring the residential districts of Onehunga and Epsom considerably closer to the township. The scheme will serve to consolidate the bus services in Mangere, and it should encourage industrial development on the Manukau. The fact that it will be an alternative route to the Great South Road is considered to be a strong point in its favour.
