PARADE AT NEW PLYMOUTH EASTERTIME’S DASH One of the most interesting features of the Taranaki Hunt Club’s race programme on Saturday was the two-year-old parade, in which eight two-year-olds and two older maidens scampered down the straight from the two-furlong post (says the “News”). It was unfortunate, however, that a part of the barrier failed to rise and the start was badly spoilt. Nevertheless several of the youngsters showed a nice turn of speed, while others left the impression that they would be seen to more advantage later in the season. Hampdes began smartly from the middle of the field, while Gibraltar dwelt and Forceful, Sparkling Morn and Cornerman were hung up by the tapes. Hampdes was well clear at the distance, but Eastertime, who did not begin too well, finished brilliantly to win by a narrow margin. Summertime was always in a good position and ran on nicely into third place, a couple of lengths farther back. Then there was a break to Tangiroa, Cornerman, Sparkling Morn and Gibraltar, who were bunched. The distance covered was slightly over two furlongs, and several watches timed Eastertime to run the distance in 29. Both the winner, Eastertime, and the third horse, Summertime, are engaged in the Avondale Stakes. They may also be seen out at Wanganui next week. The starters were: EASTERTIME (Mrs. W. D. Graham). b g, by Illumination— Gamboling, C. J. Goulsbro .... 1 HAMPDES (Mr. F. Bristol), b c, by Tea Tray—Kilcalm, K. Grylls. . 2 SUMMERTIME (Mr. F. Bristol), b f, by Grandcourt —Very Hot, B. H. Morris 3 Also started: Tangiroa (T. Tito), Cornerman (M. J. Pine), Sparkling Morn (H. N. Wiggins), Gibraltar (H. Gray). Forceful (T. Green), Goldftnder (B. Flower), and Green Patch. Of the beaten lot nothing pleased more than Cornerman and Sparkling Morn, while Forceful appears to be a trifle backward. RANDWICK WORK PAQUITO BRILLIANT MANY DOMINION HORSES TO RACE SATURDAY SYDNEY, Tuesday. With the flags out 20ft on the Randwick tracks today Paquito went brilliantly over a mile in 1.432. Limerick did steady work and trotted soundly. Nightmarch and True Shaft spurted three furlongs in 36J. High Disdain galloped almost a record six furlongs in 1.145. The New Zealand entries for the Canterbury Park races next Saturday number 44. SCRAMBLED HOME TE ATIAWA’S WIN HOPWOOD LEFT AT POST All lined up for the Stratford Handicap at New Plymouth on Saturday (states the "News"), and Te Atiawa (£4614) and Hopwood (£437) carried the bulk of the money, but the race was deprived of a lot of interest when Hopwood was hopelessly left and Denier lost his rider at the start, giving T. Metcalf a fractured leg. When the tapes were released Goblin Market began best from Te Atiawa and Chief Link. When the field had settled down Te Atiawa had assumed the leadership and was piloting Goblin Market, Chief Link, Melissa and Bonogne past the half-mile. Across the top Goblin Market had shot his bolt and Melissa ran up to second place entering the straight, with Bonogne and Chief Link next. Once in line for the judge Te Atiawa had to meet a red-hot challenge from Bonogne, and the Bisogne gelding was level with him at the distance. Riding Told Hector Gray, on the favourite, rode a desperate finish over the last 100 yards and snatched a victory that only the judge could decide. Melissa was a length and a-half away, with Chief Link and Hopwood next. Without Gray Te Atiawa probably would not have won, and his finish a tribute to the ability of his pilot. Bonogne won this race last year and, with a stronger horseman on top, would have repeated the feat. 1 his time he was at a long price. He certainly never looked more forward than he is now. * Wanted the Race Melissa was palpably short of work but the gallop will do her a world of abuuV K h ,‘ e ! Link ™ not knocked b u lt h< ?.
