Montevideo’s Great Stadium Seating 100,000 Spectators

South America’s largest stadium was opened on July 13 in a blaze of glory with a thrilling international open Soccer tournament. The world’s championship tournament, the first to be held in South America, introduced Montevideo’s £160,000 ellipitical bowl, built to accommodate 100,000 spectators. Construction was begun in 1928, following the award of the meeting to Montevideo by the Barcelona Congress of the International Football Association. The various sections of the stadium have been named '‘Olympic,” “Amsterdam,” “Colombes” and “America.” The tower was dedicated as a memorial to the Olympic Games.
