THREE KINGS ROAD

TENDERS ACCEPTED N.Z. IRON PIPES FAVOURED The w'ork of concreting Three Kings Road prior to laying the tram tracks was advanced a stage last evening when the Mount Roskill Road Board accepted the tenders of McCarten Bros., Onehunga, for the excavation and concrete work, and George Fraser and Sons for the 8-inch water mains. Seven concreting tenders were received as follow: —P. H. Brierly, £14,407; H. J. W. Moody, £14,403; H. Bray and Co., £3 3,173; Isherwood and Bellam, £12,991; Grinter Bros., £12,136; P. H. Gosse, £11,800; and McCarten Bros., £11,744. Three firms tendered for the water mains, viz., John Burns, Ltd., £1,386; Briscoe's, Ltd., £1,364; and George Fraser and Sons, £1,292. The engineer’s estimate for the whole was £15,000, and the board, by getting the work done for £13,036, should earn the approval of the ratepayers. NEW ZEALAND-MADE The engineer, Mr. John Dawson, announced that the pipes to be supplied by Messrs. Fraser and Sons will be tho product of the Onekaka Ironworks in the Nelson district, and when questioned as to their quality, he said that there was no reason on those grounds why the tender should not be accepted, because if the pipes did not come up to specification they must be condemned. The chairman expressed his pleasure that the contract prices were well within the engineer’s estimate and predicted that with the completion of tho road and tramway the progress of the district was assLired. The opinion was also expressed that the board was the first public body in the district to purchase New Zea-land-made iron water-pipes, and with the use of concrete in preference to bitumen, the whole of the loan money would be kept in the Dominion. It transpired during the discussion that no provision had been made for concreting a short length of one chain of Three Kings Road in the borough of Mount Eden near the intersection of Landscape Road and the Mount Eden Council is to be asked to arrange with McCarten Bros, to complete -this span at schedule rates.
