STAKES REDUCED DRASTIC CUT IN C.J.C. PRIZE MONEY £2,050 LESS FOR CUP FIXTURE Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Today. Evidently seeing in the greatly duced totalisator turnover at the Grand National meeting and at other recent racing fixtures throughout the countrv tho need for squaring the anticipated loss of revenue at the November meeting. the programme committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club recommended a substantial reduction in stake* amounting to £2,050. Prize-money for events for which entries have closed remains as originally fixed. T£ese races are the New Zealand Cup, of £2,000; the New Zealand Derby, of £1,500; the Welcome Stakes, of £800; the New Zealand Oaks, of £ 600. In every other instance, with the exception of the Metropolitan Handicap which still carries a £ 1,000 stake, reductions have been recommended. The heaviest cut has been applied to the Canterbury Cup, from £BOO to £soo The following schedule, adopted by the programme committee at the meeting last evening, gives the reductions for the spring meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club: — First Day.—Spring Hurdles, reduced from £4OO to £350; Spring Plate £3OO to £250; Linwood Handicap, £JOO to £250; Apprentices’ Plate, £3OO to £250; Stewards’ Handicap, £ 1,200 to £1,000; Riccarton Handicap, £350 to £3OO. Second Day.—Middleton Handicap £3OO to £250; Criterion Handicap £6OO to £500; Irwell Handicap, £3% to £250; Fendalton Handicap, £sw to £500; Randolph. Handicap, £3OO to £250; Epsom Handicap. £350 to £3OO. Third Day—Suburban Handicap, £3OO to £250; Spring Nursery, £3OO to £250; Otaio Plate, £350 to £36C Canterbury Cup, £BOO to £500; Jockey Club Handicap, £BOO to £700; Ashley Handicap, £3OO to £250; Avon Handicap, £350 to £3OO. TAKANINI WINNER FIRST FOR CLOPTON MENANGLE SUCCESS United. P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright SYDNEY, Tuesday. At the Menangle Park races today, the New Zealand gelding Clopton, carrying 8.13, and ridden by R. S. Bagby, won the first division of the Welter Handicap, six furlongs, in 1.17. Clopton, one of the J. T. Jamieson’s team, is owned by the well-known Auckland sportsman, Mr. Colin W. Anderson. This was Clopton’s first win.
