VICIOUS ATTACK
VOUNTEER WHARFIES BATTERED FRACAS IN MELBOURNE MELBOURNE, Monday. An attack was made by 200 waterside workers on about 40 free labourers today on a wharf at South Melbourne. Eight men were injured more or less seriously. The trouble occurred while some Umber was being unloaded from the steamer Nordhvaal. The volunteers, who comprise a shore gang, were chased along the wharf, knocked down and kicked. Some of the men were rendered unconscious, and were removed in ambulances to hospital. The police arrived too late to make any arrests.
