ON TWO WHEELS

MOTOR-CYCLING FIXTURES Tonight. —Monthly meeting of Sports Club. September 8. —Social run to Sharpe’s Bush, Henderson, by North Shore Club, leaving Old Dock Site at 9 a.m. September 9.—Alonthly meeting of North Shore Club. September 22. —Annual pillion trial of North Shore Club. MOTOR-CYCLE FOOTBALL SPORT TO BE REVIVED CHALLENGE MATCH SOON Motor-cycle football is to be revived in Auckland. A challenge to a match was received recently by the Sports Club from the North Shore Club, and the game will probably be staged as a curtain-raiser to a big League game later in the season. The proposal came before the League Council last week and w r as receryed with enthusiasm. The game was popular in New Zealand a few years ago, and one match was actually played in Auckland at Carlaw Park. In the South it came in for more support. This sport is very popular in England, according to motor-cycling magazines received here. The rules are very simifar to those for Soccer except that, whem the ball goes into touch, it is thrown in by the referee, who stands with his back to the players. There is no offside in this game, and the ball cannot be handled. All kicks must bo made while the machine is in motion, a penalty being incurred if this is not done. Play is in two spells of 15 minutes’ duration, with an interval of five minutes. There is no provision for a goalkeeper, the team consisting of six players with roving commissions, but if both sides decided in favour of a “goalie” the number in the team is increased to seven. Those who have seen the game state it is not difficult to play with standard machines once 1 lamps, mudguards and footrests have been removed, and involves no damage except, perhaps, to clutch and brake linings. The most strenuous , task is that of the referee, who has 1 to move fast in order to keep abreast of a machine with good acceleration, j I running in low gear throughout. Both clubs are busy organising , their teams and practices will be held shortly.
