“NO NATIONALITY”
GIRLS WHO MARRIED U.S. SAILORS A COMPLICATED QUESTION Special to THE SUN WELLINGTON, Today. A peculiar feature of the position of the New Zealand girls who married men in the American Fleet which visited New Zealand five years ago is that, while they are no longer British citizens, they are also not American. In the truest sense, these girls have no nationality. The United States Government does not recognise as citizens the wives of its nationals who marry abroad, and they have to seek admittance to the country in the ordinary way. In British law, however, a wife takes her husband’s nationality. The Bill which Mr. H. G. R. Mason, member for Auckland Suburbs, has introduced, is thus full of complications. The provision that girls may be deemed to be domiciled in this country after having been here for three years is considered by legal authorities to raise questions of international law, and it has been suggested that the Bill should be dropped-
