FINAL DAY OF RELIEF TROTS
THE unemployment relief fixture promoted by the Auckland Trotting Club was concluded at Epsom yesterday. A feature of the day’s racing was the success achieved by the Mangere reinsman, S. August, who drove four winners, f of his charges paid double-figure prices.
Despite the heavy downpour of the forenoon the weather cleared about midday, and there was a fair attendance of the public. The track was heavy, and the footing slower than on Saturday. The sum of £22,837 10s was put through the machine, making a total of £ 54,084 10s for the meeting. The racing was interesting and the fixture, generally, was well conducted, the various officials carrying out their duties efficiently. Messrs. It. T. Reid and A. E. Commons, in their stipendiary capacity, attended closely to the racing, but found everything in good order. After the Newmarket Handicap, .T. Bryce, driver of Mignonne, was cautioned for allowing his charge to boro over to Gold Treasure. Laplander, the outsider of the halfdozen runners in the Otahuhu Handicap, proved too good at the finish for the consistent Grand Bight, who added another second to his fist. The Mount
Albert Handicap was won by the favourite, Stanmoor, who gave S. August his fourth victory for the day. Windchat and Gold Sovereign won the two square-gaited items, each returning a double-figure price. Gold Treasure, vigorously and judiciously driven by A. Julian, won the Newmarket Handicap in the last few strides. Kewpie’s Guy and Trustworthy, favourites in their respective heats, both won nicely. A. review of the racing, together with the results,' is appended: Windchat Surprises Prime selections for the opening event, the JJevonport Handicap, were Parrish Belle, £sll, and Caballero, £219, but Windchart (£ 9S) was the medium of a mild surprise, lucky backers receiving double figures. Windchat. Zanzibar, and Lady Ena led early, and passing the stands the trio was attended by Marble Star. Nelson Girl and the favourite. Parrish Belle, who broke up badly just after the start. Down the back Windchat was four lengths clear of Zanzibar. Marble Star, Nelson Girl and Lady Ena, but cOming into the straight the gap was decreased by a couple of lengths, with Nelson Girl. Zanzibar and Marble Star all racing in line. Windchat held her own in the run home to win nicely by half a length from the dead-heaters, Nelson Girl (who skipped in the final stages) and Marble Star. Right up fourth was Zanzibar, and then 10 lengths back came Direct Action and Lady Ena. The Favourite Scores Only two did not parade for the Mount Eden Handicap, for which Kewpie’s Guy (£515) was a better favourite than Prince Pedro (£475), while Lady Yvonne (£118) was at an outside price. Soon after the start Windshield led Belle Wilson, Great Vanity, Jersey Thorpe and Kewpie’s Guy, and on reaching the stands Great Vanity joined the leader, the pair being attended by Prince Pedro. Kewpie’s Guy, Lady Yvonne and Jersey Thorpe. Along the back Prince Pedro made the funning from Windshield, Lady Yvonne,, Kewpie’s Guy and Jersey Thorpe, the last-named replacing Windshield approaching the straight. They came round the bend in like order, and receiving a good run on the rails, Kewpie’s Guy went on to secure a popular win by a clear length. Lady Yvonne was half a length ahead of Prince Pedro, and then followed Jersey Thorpe, Student Prince, Nelson’s Chum and Speed King. Outsider’s Success Betting in the Otahuhu Handicap took a wide range, Enawali (£750) being the actual favourite over Grand Light (£720), with the winner, Laplander, outsider of the field, carrying £337. The favourite again did not go off the mark well, it being left to John Maritius to lead early from Great Delight, Enawah and Laplander, who broke badly and dropped back. In the straight the first time Great Delight took charge from John Mauritius, Enawah, Laplander, Grand Light and Nelson Tasker. Laplander was an improver in the next six furlongs, going past the stands on terms with Great Delight, with Enawah, Grand Light, Nelson Tasker and John Mauritius all close up. Great Delight gained a slight advantage over Laplander in the back stretch and right on the outside
Gang Awa, the last pair racing promKingsclere rounding the home turn, and they had the finish to themselves, the favourite beating Dealer by threeparts of a length, with one and a-half lengths to Kingsclere, the third horse. Close up fourth was Goldman, followed by Dan Direct, Gang Awa and Great Ballin. Gold Soveriengn’s Good Price There was a lot of money for Surprise Journey in the Epsom Handicap, his support amounting to £1,034, as against Paradigm, £862. Gold Sovereign’s figures were £lsl, which resulted in a good return for backersKolmar left the mark quickly to lead Paradigm, Explosion (breaking badly) and Surprise Journey, and when they passed the stands Kolmar and Paradigm had put a break of 10 lengths over Surprise Journey, The Tartar, Floraline, and Gold Sovereign. With the exception of Floraline dropping back, no material change was recorded in the next round, and moving down the I ack for the last time Kolmar and Paradigm were clear of Gold Sovereign, who moved into third place smartly from Surprise Journey and The Tartar. Paradigm was three lengths clear of Gold Sovereign and Kolmar as they turned into the straight, but in a desperate finish Gold Sovereign got up to inflict defeat over Paradigm by a short head, with Kolmar four lengths away third. Surprise Journey was fourth, and the rest down the course. A. Julian’s Vigorous Finish In the Newmarket Handicap all the big money was for Little Guy (£1.131), with Mignonne (£754) and Gold Treasure (£474) also having a following. Bonniewah, Nelsonian and Gold Treasure were smartest to begin, while Arachne refused to strike a gait and was pulled up inside a furlong. At the stands, Bonniewah was attended by Nelsonian. Reliance, Little Guy (pulling hard). Gold Treasure and Lucy Bell, but when they had come round again Mignonne acted as pilot to Nelsonian. Bonniewah, Little Guy and Gold Treasure. Down the back. Gold Treasure took third place, and the favourite at this stage was tangling. Mignonne had three lengths over Gold Treasure at the home bend, with Little Guy leading the rest. In the run home, Mignonne weakened, allowing Gold Treasure to get up and beat her by a head, with Little Guy seven lengths away in third place, just ahead of Lucy Bell and Reliance. August Makes It Four Stanmoor, £lO4, was first choice j with backers for the final event, Mount Albert Handicap, but there was good j support for Nelson Tasker, £903, and Mountain Dell, £867. Country King, Evelyn Locanda and Mountain Dell began smartly, while The Abbey refused to settle down and was soon hopelessly out of it. At the stand Evelyn Locanda was showing the way to Country King, Mountain Dell, Nelson Tasker, Stanmoor and
Brutus, but as the back straight was entered Country King took charge from Evelyn Locanda and Mountain Dell. Crossing the top the last-named moved up, followed by the favourite, and the pair turned for home well clear of Country King, Evelyn Locanda and Brutus. Over the last 100 yards Stanmoor finished strongly to beat Mountain Dell by a length, with Evelyn Locanda two lengths back third. Brutus was fourth. followed by Country King and Nelson Tasker.
of them was Grand Light. These three were practically in line on -reaching the straight, where Nelson Tasker, Enawah and John Mauritius were attending them. The run to the judge’s box saw Laplander do best to beat Grand Light by a length and a-quar-ter, with Great Delight a further three lengths back third- John Mauritius was next, Nelson Tasker fifth, and the favourite, Enawah. last. Trustworthy Makes Amends Most money in the Panmure Handicap was Trustworthy (£937), Dan Direct (£531) and Dealer (£383). At the start Dealer, Nella Dillon and Glandore were all slow away, and before a furlong had been covered Direct Morning was pulled up. Sailor Boy, Kingsclere, Hohora, Concertina, and Dan Direct ran in that order in the early stages, and passing through the straight Kingsclere assumed command from Sailor Boy, Trustworthy. Lady Jewel, Dealer and Dan I}irect The leader was deposed in the back by Trustworthy, whose attendants were Kingsclere, Dealer, Sailor Boy. Lady Jewel, Dan Direct, Goldman and inently on the outside. There was little between Trustworthy, Dealer and

RELIEF EFFORT TROTTING CLUB'S QUOTA FOR UNEMPLOYED TAXATION REFUND As a result of the trotting meeting promoted by the Auckland Club for unemployment relief, it is anticipated between £6,000 and £7,000 will be available for equal division between the Auckland Hospital Board and the Auckland City Council. I The Hospital Board will utilise its i portion for relief purposes, while the City Council will expend its quota in wages for present unemployed men, ' who will be given work. The Government taxation of over £5,000 will be remitted, as was done in the case of the earthquake benefit meeting last year. The club’s genera, receipts for the fixture totalled £ 6.61 U, j made up as follow: —Totalisator ptt* I centage, £4,056; gates, £1,718; no©inafions and acceptances, £836. Tt« i sum of £4,000 was given in stake, and after paying other expenses iacurred in running the meeting, it & probable therp will be a surplus o. over £I,OOO to add to the Government refund. Free Services No charge is made for the work o. organising and conducting the tion. The services of the judge, Mr. L V. Sutherland, handicapper, Mr. U Paul, and starter, Mr. H. Shaw, wers given free, while other officials sc* cepted pay for one day only. Gatekeepers and other employees also made a donation toward the fund. The result must be considered satisfactory in view of the unfavourable weather conditions which prevaiiea I yesterday morning, and had a mental effect upon the attendance. La« I year, -with a one-day fixture, the cia ' realised £ 5,061 for the earthquake relief fund.
