In the Market Place

EGG PRICES LOWER FIRST ASPARAGUS SOLD Rapidly increasing supplies and only a moderate demand have driven egg prices still lower, a decrease of an average of one penny a dozen being noted at the City Markets auctions this morn- | ing. Over-supplies of nearly every vegetable in season has led to low prices, kumeras from Tauranga alone showing a beter return. This is due to supplies having fallen off with low values ruling some weeks ago. Cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, celery and swedes have come forward in too great quantities for the market. New potatoes are in good supply. Values quoted lor a shipment of Californian onions which arrived „last week were not up to expectations, and these have been selling only slowly. The season’s first asparabus came to hand late last Friday, realising from 2s to 3s 3d a bundle. There will be no direct shipment of fruit from Sydney this week, hut supplies in hand will be sufficient to tide the market over until the next boat. Mandarins from the cooler are bringing from 9s to 12s 6d, according to condition. Apples are still dull, as are also Poorman orange? and lemons, which are in very large supply. Island oranges are seling well, bananas also meeting with a good demand. Passions, in short supply, are dear. Tree tomatoes are dull of sale except for prime quality. Farmers’ butter remains firm at lid to Is 2d, although the price for the factory product fell one penny a pound last week. Supply and demand are moderate.
