ACCIDENTAL DEATH
INQUEST ON BANDMASTER MOTORMAN EXONERATED A verdict of accidental death was returned at an inquest, held this afternoon concerning the death of Mr. Christopher Smith, City bandmaster, who received fatal injuries when knocked down by a tramcar in Hobson Street on August 27. In giving his verdict, the coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., exonerated the motorman from blame. John tD. Pollard, the motorman of the tramcar, said that he saw Mr. Smith crossing the road, and he gave tbo customary warning by sounding the gong. Mr. Smith apparently did not hear. He hesitated, and then walked right into the front of the car, which struck him. By applying the brakes immediately, witness brought the tram to a standstill within a distance of nine feet.
