The birth-rate for 1929 is the lowest since the establishment of registration, and the death-rate is the highest since 1919. A statistical review of England and Wales discloses that the birth-rate for 1929 was 10.3 in the thousand, compared with 16.7 for 1925. The death-rate is 13.4 in the thousand, compared with 11.7, an increase due to the high mortality from respira-, tory and circulation diseases, plus the influenza epidemic. The suicide rate was 126 in the million, which is the highest yet recorded. Motor-cars caused 5,799 deaths, compared with 4,492 in 1921.
