SECONDARY SCHOOLS

AUCKLAND’S DOUBLE WIN Press Association WELLINGTON, Sunday. Auckland had a double win in the secondary schools Soccer matches against Wellington at the Basin Reserve yesterday, the senior secondary school team winning by 7 goals to 1 and the junior team by 4 to 3. The senior boys provided a sharp surprise for Wellington, because they not only outplayed and outweighed the Wellington boys, but showed speed and resource which would have troubled any Wellington senior team. In combination and pace they were not to be held. Their average age probably was higher by a couple of years than that of the local boys and they knew far too much about the game for their opponents, running over them easily at moments. At half time Auckland led s—o, each goal being gained by pretty work, and after Wellington changed round the run of play continued in the Northerners’ favour. The local boys had faced the wind and sun in the first spell and considering this handicap their debit balance was not as bad as it might have been. In the second half they played up better, but could score only a solitary goal from McDermott's foot, while Auckland put on two more and was many times close to scoring. The six-goal margin was not an over-statement of the difference between tlie strength of the teams. Auckland’s scorers were Jepson (4), Grant (2) and Dixon. In the junior boys’ match Auckland again held the p|\ponderance of weight, but Wellingl <\Xk’s nippy team had slightly the better of the game up to half time when a local boy, Anderson, broke his ankle in a melee and left the team a man short. For the rest of the match Wellington played up well and carried the score from the two-all stage of half time to 3—2, when James netted a beauty. After some fast play by the Auckland forwards Cleal equalised and a little later put through a penalty, which proved to be the winning score. Auckland’s scorers were Cleal (3) and MacCready. while for Wellington James (2) and Quirk scored.
