WORK FOR 20 SEAMEN
N.Z. ARTICLES FOR STEAMER OMANA CHANGE-OVER ANNOUNCED Twenty unemployed members of the New Zealand Seamen’s and Firemen’s Union will soon be placed in employment when the Union Steam Ship Company’s cargo steamer Omana is put on Npw Zealand articles. The vessel, which arrived here on Saturday morning from Newcastle, is one of three steamers which were taken over by the Union Company from R. S. Lamb and Co., Ltd., Sydney, seven months ago. The other two are the Gabriella and the Kalingo. They are all engaged in the cargo service between Australia and New Zealand. In future the Omana will be manned by New Zealand seamen and firemen, instead of Australians, but the master, officers, and engineers will not be affected. It has not been announced whether the Gabriella and Kalingo are to be put on New Zealand articles. The Australian seamen and firemen on board the Omana will be sent back to Australia by the Niagara, which leaves Auckland for Sydney tomorrow week.
