SURPRISE JOURNEY STOPS THE ROT
Relief Trotting Fixture
AUCKLAND CLUB'S EFFORT
IN fine but windy weather the first day’s card of the Auckland Trotting Club’s unemployed relief meeting was staged at Alexandra Park on Saturday. There was an attendance of over 12.000 and the course, despite heavy rain overnight, was in good order, although the footing was slow. With the exception of Surprise Journey, favourites failed with monotonous regularity, consequently some useful dividends were returned.
The proceedings were interesting throughout, and the management of the function was up to the usual high standard so well known at ISpsom. The various officials carried out their duties efficiently, while Messrs. R. T. Reid and A. E. Commons, stipendiary stewards, kept a close watch on the racing. A. Bryce, driver of Evelyn Locanda in the big race, was fined £2 for looking round. Speculation was fairly keen, the sum of £31,247 being handled by a competent totalisator staff. I’om pared with the £35,522 handled last August for the one-day earthquake relief meeting, the return showed a decrease of £4,275. Some Good Prices The big event of the day, the Auckland Handicap, provided a stirring finish between Great Delight, Grand Light and Stanmoor, heads only separating the two as they passed the judge in that order. The favourite, Enawah, lost ground at the start, and when in the firing line over the final furlong, broke. The winner, who showed a pleasing return to form, returned a double-figure price. The second leg of the “double,” the Avondale Handicap, saw the favourite. Country King, who was the hope of many double backers, beaten by Mountain Dell and Hal Chimes, after having every chance. Nelson Girl silenced the opposition in the Grey Lynn Trot, again proving her value in soft ground, while Surprise Journey won the two-mile trot after a solid struggle with Paradigm. Moko Chief, recognised for some years as a speedy but most unreliable customer, gave of his best for the exTasmanian rcinsman, E. Tuke. and gave the novice field the slip in the concluding stages, to return a twofigure price. Nella Dillon won the Mount Roskill Handicap in fine style from Wood vale, who was at a great price, while Mignonne went her first real race since coming North, to score in the slow two-mile event. A review of the racing, together with the results, is appended: A. Julian Opens the Season Favourites in Caballero, £542, and Ockley Wood, £SOO, were routed in the Grey Lynn Handicap, the dividends being returned by Nelson Girl, £341, and Direct Action, £222. At the start Caballero went away to a gallop and Ockley Wood lost ground, the order when they had settled down being
Golden Huia, Zanzibar, Caballero and Windchat, while both Nelson Girl and Direct Action were coming through smartly. With a circuit covered —at the stands again—Caballero (breaking), led Nelson Girl, Zanzibar, Direct Action and Windchat, but in the back stretch. Nelson Girl soon assumed command from Direct Action, Caballero, Zanzibar and Windchat; and at the turn for home the leader was two lengths clear of Direct Actton, who was three lengths ahead of Zanzibar. Thus they finished. Nelson Girl beating Direct Action by three parts of a length, with Zanzibar two lengths back. Caballero. Windchat, Golden Huia and Marble Star were next to cross the line. Moko Chief at Last There was a genuine surprise in the Ponsonby Handicap, when Moko Chief romped home at a fine double-figure price. His support amounted to £156, as against the favourites, Nelson’s Chum £649, and Prince Pedro £6ll. The order from the barrier was Windshield, Lucy Bell, Student Phince, Whakahihi, Worthy Chief and Kewpie’s Guy, and round to the stands there was little material change in the leading bunch, Whakahihi replacing Student Prince, whose attendants were Prince Pedro, Nelson’s Chum, Kewpie’s Guy and Moko Chief. Along the back Lucy Bell and Windshield were racing together in front of Student Prince and Prince Pedro, with Moko Chief following. The first four were still paired when the home turn was rounded, where Moko Chief was moving very fast on the outside. It was a good set-to, but Moko Chief maintained an irresistible run to beat Prince Pedro by a length and a-half, with a similar distance to the third horse Lucy Bell. The fourth horse was Student Prince, and then came Kewpie’s Guy, Windshield and Lady Yvonne. Great Delight’s Comeback Enawah and Grand Light came in for big support in the Auckland Handicap, carrying £1,543 and £1,024 respectively, but the winner, Great Delight, £231, was at splendid double figures. The favourite broke at the start and lost a lot of ground, Great Delight leading out from Stanmoor. Grand Light, Evelyn Locanda. At the stands the first time Evelyn Locanda had run into third place behind Great Delight and . Stanmoor, with Laplander and Grand Light following, and Enawah heading the others. The field was bunching by the time they reached the straight the second time, and here Great Delight was making play for Evelyn .Locanda, Grand Light and Stanmoor, then daylight to Enawah. Laplander, John Mauritius, Warplane
and Nelson Tasker. In the back Grand Light took second place, and Enawah too was improving her position. Great Delight stili held charge at the bend from Grand Light. Enawah (who broke in the run home), Stanmoor, Laplander and Nelson Tasker. A good finish resulted. Great Delight staying on remarkably well to beat Grand Light by a head, with Stanmoor a similar distance away. Laplander, Nelson Tasker and Enawah were next. Nella Dillon’s Popular Win The Mount Roskill Handicap saw short odds offered about Trustworthy, whose figures were £1.374 compared with £914 on Nella Dillon. Woodvale. £145, was at a nice figure for a win.
Kingsclere was prominent early from Child© Audubon, Holiora, Trustworthy and Nella Dillon, but Trustworthy soon ran through, and at the stands lay in behind the pacemaker, their attendants being Hohora, Dealer, Childe Audubon. Woodvale and Nella Dillon. Passing down the back nothing headed Kingsclere, and he led Dealer, Woodvale and Nella Dillon. with Direct Morning and Trustworthy next, the latter having gone to a break. There was no change into the home stretch, but asked a question, Nella Dillon responded gamely, finishing fast to beat Woodvale by a head. Kingsclere held out for third honours only a head further back, and then followed Direct Morning, Dealer, Sailor Boy and Trustworthy. One for Tomkinson Bettors showed sound judgment in the Onehunga Handicap when they selected the places to be filled by Surprise Journey (£1,013). Paradigm (£815) and Kolmar (£640). Bright Light refused to go away correctly, while Kolmar made the early running from Surprise Journey and Sebisca, but passing the stands Paradigm held charge from Surprise Journey. Kolmar. Sebisca, The Tartar, Floraline and Gold Sovereign. At the mile post Sebisca left his feet and lost a lot of ground. In the straight the second time the favourite was in front of Paradigm and Kolmar, with Sebisca heading the remainder, and the first three kept their positions right along the back and into the straight. Surprise Journey and Paradigm staged a fair finish, victory going to the former by three parts of .a length. Kolmar was three lengths away third, and then followed The Tartar, Sebisca, Gold Sovereign and Floraline. Backers Astray Selections for the Ellerslie Handicap were Little Guy. £1,270, and Trustworthq, £ 880, but those to return the dividends were Mignonne. £483. and Arachne, £462. Surprise came early when the driver of the favourite was out of the sulky as the field was dispatched, losing a lot of ground. Maid of the Mountains went away smoothly to make play from Nelsonian and Lady Jewel, and when they came round to the stands the last-named was leading Arachne, Nelsonian. Mignonne, Maid of the Mountains and Rolf© Audubon. After a further six furlongs had been covered Arachne assumed command from Mignonne. Trustworthy, Nelsoniari. Lady Jewel and Little Guy. and down the back no change was recorded. The first three Aver© almost in line coming into the straight, with Little Guy following, but in the run to the post Mignonne went on to score handsomely by a
length and a-half from Arachne. who beat Trustworthy by three-quarters of a length. Little Guy filled fourth place ahead of Dan Direct, Nelsonian and Maid of the MountainsMountain Dell’s Fine Finish Country King (£1,318) was installed a staunch favourite for the Avondale Handicap, but third was his portion, the dividend payers being Mountain Dell (£685) and Hal Chimes (£606). At the start Gang Awa refused to leave and took no part in the race. Brutus, Goldman, Master Huia, Country King and Mountain Dell was the order when they were released, but at the stands Mountain Dell was in third place followed by Country King, Hal Chimes and All Bell. Brutus was still running in front down tivs hack, with Country King, Mountain Dell, Goldman and Hal Chimes in chase, snd nearing the straight Country King deposed the leader, to turn into the home stretch ahead of Brutus, Hal Chimes, Mountain Dell and Goldman. A spirited finish took place, Mountain Dell finishing strongly to get the verdict by half a length from Hal Chimes, who beat Country King by three-parts of a length. Brutus was fourth, and next to arrive were Goldman, The Abbey and Belle Ax worthy. GREY LYNN HANDICAP (Harness) Of £200; limit, 3.45; 1£ miles. I—NELSON GIRL <W.
