GENERAL NOTES

Taranaki Egg-laying Competition.— The following are the results of the Taranaki Egg—laying Competition to and including the 20th week. In the “mite Leghorn section Gibbons Bros.‘ hen has now laid a total of. 120 eggs. A. Millar’s hen has also passed the century mark with a same of 1.0-1. The leading birds in the remaining breeds are:—Anconas, W. R. Lee 95;

White Rocks, E. M. Galvin; Rhode Island Reds, A. J. Lacey 92; White Wyandottes, Gibbons Bros. 77; Black Orpington, D. M. Waddell 86; Light Sussex, A. J. Davey 198; Fawn Runner Ducks, Thos. Dowthwaite 99, V. L. Gane 95; White Runners, D. M. Waddell 57; Khaki Campbells, J. W. Carrick 106.

In the light breeds, three-bird test, Gibbons Bros.’ White Leghorns 269; heavy breeds. Gibbons Bros.’ White Wyandottes 226. At every show held in New' Zealand the White Leghorn is always a striking feature of the show. Evidently this is not so in South Australia, as at the Port Adelaide show held recently, with an entry of approximately 600 fowls, not a single White or Brown Leghorn was exhibited.

During the past couple of seasons keen interest has been evinced in Black Minorcas, a number of valuable specimens having been sent up North from leading Canterbury breeders. Mr. Cummings sent a grand cockerel to Mr. Thornton Clive, Hawke’s Bay, also one to Mr. Doig, Wellington. Mr. Crawford Strang, Wanganui, has also just received a trio from Mr. Cran--

field, Christchurch. The trio comprised the winning pullet at Christchurch show', the winning pullet at Rangiora and a dubbed cock. Auckland breeders w r ill need to look to their laurels next show' season. Mr. J. Cummings, Christchurch, reports good business in English Leghorns. He has shipped most of his last year’s pullets and cockerels to a well-known Australian fancier. Mr. Cummings tells me t.he demand for Brown Leghorns has far exceeded his expectations, with the result, every available egg for sitting has been booked.
