AIRPORT QUESTION
COUNCIL FORMS VIEWS $ The City Council last evening formulated the following views upon the proposed establishment of a commercial airport for Auckland, adopting the recommendations of the Works Committee: “The necessary land should be acquired as soon as possible. ‘‘The financial arrangements necessary should be left to the controlling authority. ‘‘The form of control should be by a board on similar lines to the Harbour Board, preferably without increasing the existing number of authorities.” ‘‘A board with rating powers over the whole area will be necessary,” said the Deputy-Mayor, A. J. Entrican, moving that the above proposals be laid before the adjourned conference of local bodies next month. “No expenditure or liability will fall on the council until legislation has been passed setting up the controlling authority.” Cr. Hutchison: It is necessary to secure the site before settlement becomes too close.
