ACCOUNTS OF DRAINAGE BOARD LOCAL BODY AGREEMENT The annual balance-sheet of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board has been returned by the Audi-tor-General with a tag attached staling that the board has, without express authority, entered into special agreements with certain contributory local bodies for the construction of works, the cost of which is to be borne by such local bodies. The engineer and secretary. Mr. 17. i I T. Watkins, reported that all the worKs i were thought to be necessary and de- ; sirable to enable the contributing authorities to connect drainage of thj respective portions of their districts to | the board’s sewer system. He had not considered that the board’s statutory I powers in this connection would be 1 questioned. He had communicated on the matter j with the Attorney-General, who. in j reply, had advised him* that the Audit j Office would take no further action rei garding past agreements, but it the ; board intended in future to enter ?nio I agreements of a similar nature steps j should be taken during the present | session of Parliament to obtain neces - ; sary authorising legislationMr. Watkins stated that thv •y-.ard j had agreed to construct a culvert in , Newton Central schoolground on the understanding that the Education Department, the City Council and the j Drainage Board each contributed onethird of the cost. He therefore recommended that authorising legislation oe 'obtained. The proposed was adopted.
