Gaol for Motorist Who Caused Death

“CRIMINAL FOLLY” JUDGE'S STERN REfeUKE HAMILTON, Today. Strong criticism of prisoner's driving was expressed by Justice Smith in the Supreme Court today when sentencing to three months’ imprisonment Hector John Shaw, 21, who was found guilty of negligently driving a car and causing the death of his cousin, Thomas B. Shaw, at Newstead, near Hamilton.

“It is driving like this which puts in jeopardy the lives of innocent people,” his Honour told prisoner. “You drove your car in a reckless manner, and the occupants in the approaching car might have been killed. Those found guilty of negligent driving must learn that they indulge in criminal folly at the risk of their own liberty. Prisoner’s driving licence was cancelled for two years, and the judge recommended the prison authorities not to associate Shaw with ordinary criminals.
