STRAND
NEW PICTURES TOMORROW This evening sees the final presentation of the current programme at the Strand Theatre. This includes “At the Villa Rose,” a thrilling detective story made by the English studios, and short talkie items.
E. H. Calvert is again seen as District Attorney Markham in “The Benson Murder Case,” coming to the Strand tomorrow and the third of the S. S. Van Dine pictures in which he has portrayed this important character. Calvert created the part in “The Canary Murder Case” and repeated it in “The Greene Murder Case.” William Powell is again seen as Philo Vance.
“The Benson Murder Case” was directed by Frank Tuttle, the man who made “The Greene Murder Case,” and Eugene Pallette, seen in the role of Detective Sergeant Heath in the two previous pictures, contributes another hilarious episode to his series. “The Benson Murder Case” is even more baffling than either of the other two detective thrillers. Five suspects are lined up for the ruthless police grilling, and each proves his innocence. Then, from these, five, Powell, by adroit figuring, picks the guilty person.
A second attraction will be shown on tomorrow’s programme in “Crazy That Way,” a comedy of marital high jinks among the younger smart set. with Joan Bennett and Kenneth Mac Kenna as the stars.
