Square-Gaiters for Alexandra Park

USEFUL BRIGADE POSSIBLES AND PROBABLES / ~ The square-gaited fraternity are catered for to the extent of two heats each day during the progress of the Auckland Club’s relief fixture and, as usual, these items have drawn good fields. The shorter distance race will find some Liseful improvers in action, while many well-known and solid trotters are engaged in the longer and higher grade event. The form disclosed at this meeting will be useful for students of the game when the October functions roll round. A Gay Caballero Caballero is only in his infancy, but judging by his display at Hastings in March, when he beat several useful performers, the Longburn-owncd and trained trotter has a good future before him. He is bred on excellent lines, being by Real Guy from Dady Nan. a mare that proved herself a good one at the square gait. Jf W. Hughes has his candidate up to concert pitch, lie will make the twelve-furlong items interesting-. Te Ngutu’s Lapses Two seasons ago Te Ngutu came into the fixture as a trotter likely to reach a fair standard, but after getting on the winning list at Thames the mare failed to make any further progress. Dast season she never struck anything like form a'nd had developed bad breaking habits. Should the Imperial Child mare decide at any time to keep an even gait all the way, she will pay a good price.

A Delicate Mare Windcliat is a nice young trotter, but unfortunately she appears to possess a delicate constitution which has kept her from entering her name on the winners’ list. Dast year the daughter of The Triumph went all to pieces on the trip to New .Plymouth and was far from right when raced later at Cambridge. In her work at Otahuhu lately, the half-sister to Betty Moko has been showing encouraging form, but after solid work the mare goes off her food. So far she is proving difficult to train. One to Keep in Mind

A trotter toward the close of ihe season that attracted some notice was Zanzibar. He had his first race experience at the Cambridge fixture, where he made quite a decent showing. Then he tackled solid opposition at Alexandra Park in June and although far from looking in the best of condition, the Pukekohe representative again gave for a good portion of the distance. While he may not vet be equal to defeating some of the "more seasoned trotters handy to him. Zanzibar may not have long to wait to register success when the country circuit opens. May Prove the Goods

Just before the Cambridge meeting in May, rumours were floating around that the young trotter, Moko Bellr. was a cut above the ordinary. ard many shrewd followers of the pastime were enticed to speculate a little cn

the Mangere candidate. The daughter °I Peter Moko was never sighted on the journey as far as prominence was concerned, and it is possible she may require time before reaching a stage of usefulness. Although now in J. T. Paul's establishment. Moko Beils wili need to show a lot of improvement if she is to head off the lot opposed to her on Saturday.

Ockley Wood ran a couple of good races last season when touring the North Island, but a tendency to leave her feet on the slightest provocation saw L. Berkett’s charge beaten into a miner place on more than one occasion. At Hastings the Woodland Whispers mare acted as runner-up each day to Parrish Belle and Caballero, two sound youngsters, but her turn came later at Wanganui, where over two miles she beat Rangitero and Blue Gold after a desperate finish.

Nelson Girl Improves Surprisingly good form was displayed at the June fixture of the Auckland Trotting Club by Xelson Girl, who lias made a lot of advancement since signing on with the Green I.ane trainer, A. J. Julian. The Xelson Bingen mare

evidently relished the heavy KO = n on the second day put up an attri.?," 4 performance to dead-heat with m ® and Gold for first place. Nelson IS on a. mark from which she Irl a lot of check. Can S>ve

Great Old General Direct Action is having i little all to himself of late, and seldom bothers the Epson, tracks If, the same the Ban Pronto gddine'i 1 hard as nails, trainer Fred having prescribed pienty of wait--and climbing exercise for the aiK trotter. On tins course of Bircct Action ran a sound r;*™™ Bpsom in June, and went verv close J 1 returning a big price. As lie will® hU surprise packet on the day. ne Will He See It Out? A good speedy trotter un to 14 furlongs. Bright Bight seema to after reaching that point and in many races over two miles lias help put down as a non-staver. The be , he has given perhaps over the loncf. course was when he ran second®. Olivo Xelson at Ilawite last Bast. 11 * and while he had no earthly chance beating the Karamea mare. Rri.w Light silenced the rest of field without much difficulty Tf chestnut from Jlawera may disnlav better stamina this year. y Qualifying For High Grade Few horses in their class made mors progress last season than Kolmar and when he won at the Epsom June’carnival his showing was good enough to suggest he would win in his turn in /nm-e pretentious society. Th© SQn of Nelson Bingen took some vears become balanced, but in his latest essays solidity has been his long suit! Trainer Joe Edwards will have Kolmar ready for the approaching carnivawhere the trotter should find the footing quite suitable. A Good Combination It would not require much improvement on the part of Paradigm to say he should defeat Kolmar at their next meeting, and jls the latter must have a rosy chance in the two-mile contests at the Auckland function, the Hamil-ton-owned trotter will enter seriously into calculations. Paradigm made fine progress last season and proved himself a genuine stayer. By this time he will have become more accustomed to J. T. Paul’s driving. and they should prove a good combination this season.

Ex-Pacer Trotting Well Explosion has been suing so well in his track tasks since being converted to the square gait, that a good deal ot interest will be taken in his appearance among the trotters. The Nelson Bingen gelding may when in a bunched field change to"the pace, but if he elects to go correctly at the trot W. Clifton* charge will keep the rest busy, it is probable that the ex-pacer will be all the better for a race or two at his new gait to gain confidence in companv. but it should not be long before he is capable of disputing his claim to a winning certificate.

No doubt Sebisca will be ai! in readiness for active service this week-end, and when the old Harold Dillon gelding is finished with hia opponents over two miles, they will realise they have been to the races. He appears to have taken a new lease of life and is working so soundly as to indicate that he will lift some more prize money before laying aside his trotting boots for keeps. Sebisca has put up his best essays on soft ground, and if he gets the course to his liking G. Mitchell’s square-gaiter will take a power of beating. Due Any Day Now Although Flora line did not succeed in putting his name on the stake tax list during the June meeting at Alexandra Park, the Florizel gilding ran solid races, and with anything like an ordinary slice of luck, he would have returned a dividend. However, S. Groat's trotter will still have the chance to atone for those failures, and his present condition is of such a nature as to suggest that his turn is not many moons off. When properlv wound up. Floraline is a trotter capable of doing big things. May Surprise Them

The Australian square-gaiter. Surprise Journey, now in W. J. Tom kinson’s charge, will be making his first Dominion appearance at the Auckland fixture. Dike a lot more trotters from the Commonwealth. Surprise Journey knows the game thoroughly, but it is just a question whether he is the real “mackay” over two miles. If Surprise Journey can go the journey at Epsom he will probably surprise the backers of some of the fancied brigade.
