Art Union For Racing Clubs

They Are Not Taxed A HAPPY SUGGESTION The Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s annual race meeting, held on the Hastings racecourse, on Saturday, was a success from every point of view but the right one for the club, viz., the financial aspect, writes “Hermit” in the “Hawke’s Bay Herald.” The club had secured good nominations and acceptances, and was favoured with a fine day. But the attendance was not quite up to expectations, and the totalisator revenue slumped disastrously. This may all have been due to the stressful times, and lack of spending power on the part of the people, though not all of it I think. It was evident from remarks freely expressed by a large section of the community, that the Government’s increased taxation on totalisator investments was looked upon with very strong disfavour. Unity is Strength ■Whatever the cause, the plain unpleasant fact remains that the totalisator receipts showed a. decrease on last year’s not very high figures, of £1,999. It almost seems as though racing clubs may have to combine and ask permission of the Government to run an art union to make up their very serious losses on running race meetings.

[One point the Napier critic failed to stress was that art unions are not taxed! ]
