DAIRY PRODUCE OUTLOOK
AN ENGLISH VIEWPOINT i Discussing the outlook for butter and cheese, the Anglo-Continental | Produce Company, Limited, writing j from London on July 2, said: j “The stocks of butter as at July 1 I are estimated at 1,250,000 boxes. The j weather in Germany is very dry, the j cattle in some districts are suffering J from the foot and mouth and 1 Germany has taken during the past > two weeks 95 per cent, of the Estonian, j Latvian, Lithuanian, and Polish butter; but, noth withstanding this, the stocks here continue to increase, showing that : the consumption of butter is far from what it should be. The in European countries, apart from Germany, is 10 per cent, to 15 per cent, above that of last year. Siberia continues to ship a little under one-half of last year’s quantity. “With the prospects of another good season in New Zealand, and with plenty of cheap food for the cattle on this side, there is no doubt that we will need every possible outlet for butter during the coming winter, and we think it would be advisable for New Zealand and other countries exporting now throughout the whole year to advertise the merits of butter. We are sure that the consumption can be increased considerably if butter is properly advertised, and this will increase the return to the producer. ‘ The cheese market is dist appointing. The stocks are no heavier i than last year, and yet the prices are 15s a cwt. less, which goes to show that the markets generally are suffor--1 ing from the economic position of this ! country, as well as practically the 1 -Hou world.*'
