NEW FERRY LANDING
LITTLE SHOAL BAY SCHEME NO DECISION REACHED Representatives of the Birkenhead and Northcote Borough Councils recently met the Harbour Board to discuss a proposal to serve both boroughs with one ferry steamer landing. After protracted discussion no agreement was reached and representatives of the two boroughs are now considering the change among themselves.
The Harbour Board engineer, Mr. D. Holderness, recently submitted a plan to the Board whereby a ferry landing situated in Little Shoal Bay, could be made to accommodate the traffic for both Birkenhead and Northcote.
Roadways would lead from the landing to both boroughs. The scheme was drawn up in an endeavour to speed up the ferry service to both boroughs, and to cheapen the cost of maintaining two wharves —one at Birkenhead, and the other at Northcote.
Little Shoal Bay seemed an ideal spot for such a proposal, as it is sheltered in all weathers and the cost of the new* proposed ferry wharf would not be excessive.
Although the representatives of both boroughs agreed that the scheme had certain advantages, they could not arrive at any decision to make a change. Any conclusions reached by the boroughs will be communicated to the Harbour Board, but it is believed that business interests in Northcote will not agree to any change in the ferry landing.
