DAIRY AWARD PROBLEM

TWO BODIES EXISTING BOTH CLAIM CONTROL Press Association PALMERSTON N., Tuesday. An unusual set of circumstances was revealed when a council of conciliation met at Palmerston North today to consider an application by tbe Wellington Dairy Factory Managers’ Industrial Union of Workers for an increase in wages and other improvements in present working conditions. The Union of Workers was represented by Messrs. C. Gough, J. A. Brooking and E. Mcßrierly, while Mr. R. Fulton, of New Plymouth, appeared as agent. The employers were represented by Messrs. J. W. Rodclen and P. J. Small. Proceedings were taken in committee, and at the conclusion the Commissioner, Mr. P. Hally, intimated that unusual circumstances had prevented anything being accomplished. From statements made it would appear that two associations of managers is in existence. Firstly, there is the Union of Workers, who duly registered their association under the Act and who claimed that a majority of the managers had been enrolled as members of their particular organisation. On the other hand there is a section.of managers who have banded themselves together but who do not claim to have any registration. Nevertheless, they, too, claim a major portion of the managers within their fold. As tire last-mentioned organisation proposed to meet on Monday next to consider their position, the proceedings today were adjourned in the hope that an amalgamation of the two sections would be brought about. Should that hope not eventuate it will be necessary to refer the position to the Court of Arbitration for advice as to whether the award should be made or otherwise. Should the court determine in the affirmative, then the parties will be called together again and an endeavour made to arrange the matter as provided by the Arbitration Act.
