GIRL GUIDES’ CORNER

The Devonport Company 'will hold 6* fancy-dress danco at the Parish Hall, Church Street, Devonport, on the evening of Saturday, September 6. when Guides and Brownies will attend. The Brownies’ function will begin at seven o’clock and conclude at nine, and a happy evening is anticipated.

Dancing Star reports for the First Takapuna Company: “On August 9, we held our second annual dance, which was a great success. During the evening an exhibition of country dancing was given by some of the Guides. “At the meeting held on August 15. Mrs. Johnson, a member of the St. John Ambulance, showed us how to make a bed for an invalid. Scarcely any of us had realised before how complicated bed-making could be. We have been working at First Aid this month.

“The district basketball tournament was held on Saturday, August 23. at the Takapuna Grammar School. Four companies, Devonport, Brett, North Shore and Takapuna took part in it, Takapuna Company being the winners after a very hard game with North Shore. The following are the results: —Takapuna 16, Brett 12; North Shore 22, Devonport 4; Takapuna 16, North Shore 10. “We were, of course, very elated at our success, and we hope for further victories when playing against the winners of the town district tournaments.”

Singing River reports for the Te Awamutu Company: “At the first meeting of the month a Second Class competition was held, and it was won by the Kingfisher patrol. At the next meeting a knottying competition resulted in a win for the Fantail patrol, and a game of •Pincho’ was played. “Signalling work in corners was carried out at the next meeting, and each patrol made arrangements for the acting of a Guide Daw. “The attendance during the month was good? and the ribbons were won by the Fantail. Robin and Kingfisher patrols.

“The company has been looking forward to a visit from our Divisional Commissioner, Mrs. Toombs.”
