PERSEVERANCE WINS

— m — SCARAMOUCHE PARTY RECEIVE GOOD RETURN MIGHT HAVE WON TWICE By reason of his two performances at Ellerslie over the week-end it can be assumed that Scaramouche will be found racing with credit in steeplechase events in future. He is not a big horse, nor one which can he said to appeal as a prospective ’chaser, but he lias pace over the average and is usually a reliable jumper. The Greenmount Steeplechase proved him a better horse than generally regarded, hence the good price obtained. And speakers on the long shot had no cause to worry in the last half-mile, Scaramouche showing great confidence at his obstacles and at the same time travelling fairly comfortably to beat Freyja. Whether he would have won the Pakuranga Hunt Cup is a matter for conjecture, but till he fell on the hill the last time there seemed a big chance of him pulling it off. The winning mount gave trainerjockey J. Preston his first victory for three years, while it also signalised the owner’s (Mr. Merrick) return to the winning list since he and a partner acquired Scaramouche as a four-year-old for 250gns. Some time ago Mr. Merrick purchased his partner’s share, which led him to qualify his horse for hunters’ /races with a happy result.
