TREATMENT OF CANCER

GOOD WORK IN LONDON HOSPITALS WSCOVERY ROUND THE CORNER “A tremendous amount of work in cancer research is being done in England today, and the biochemistry of the cancer cell is better understood. “It is only reasonable to conclude that the discovery of the cause of cancer is ju§t round the corner, and that it will be found in the next 10 years.” The above statements were made by Mr. Eisdell Moore, F.R.C.S., who returned to Auckland by the lonic today after an extended tour abroad. Mr. Moore, wi»> was accompanied by Mrs. Moore, left the ship at Naples and toured Italy for three wrecks. He then went on to Switzerland and France. While in Paris Mr. Moore spent some time with Professor Regaud, of the Radium Institute* where he watched some of the treatment. The centre of cancer research in London at present is the Mount

Vernon Hospital, where only cancer patients are treated. This hospital is staffed by members of the various hospitals in London. Mr. Stamford Cade and Mr. Donaldson are the two principal surgeons. At the Westminster Hospital, said Mr. Moore, the surgeons are investigating the value of a “bomb” of radium. This “bomb” is valued roughly at £5G,000, and contains four grammes of radium. It allows the radium to be used at a distance and it is not needled into the cancer growth. If this method of treating cancer is successful it will allow the deeper-seated growths to be attended without surgical exposure. Mr. Moore attended tTie conference of the Association of British Surgeons at Bristol in May and heard many interesting discussions.

He stated that as far as the routine of suy.gical work is concerned, the hospitals in New Zealand are quite in line with the hospitals of London.
